Rape, rapists and the society

Priyambda Samanta Roy, Sem II, 2024

We have unleashed another level of savagery. Rape has become as common as breathing today so how are wesupposed to prioritize it? It is being prioritized on the basis of intensity of savagery done on the women.

12 years ago, on 16th of December 2012, we had Nirbhaya fighting for her life for 11 day and on 29th December 2012 in hospital she took her last breath. Those people who had raped her till her intestine were bulged out of stomach and her body on verge of dying, threw her out naked in bitter artic night.

And now after 12 year another doctor has been brutally raped and killed at her own workplace and that also on-duty.There wasno part of her body that hasn’t had any injury, multiple bite marks and her pelvic girdle was broken leaving both her legs at a 90-degree angle. Brutally killed by throttling. Still, they haven't found the culprit of this incident after this another student coming from candle march was raped and killed after smashing her head with a stone so no one can recognize her.

After this heinous crime the rapist will be seen as a human and will be give the maximum punishment a human can get that is “hanged to death”. Why do we still treat rapist as humans when they lost their humanity that day, still giving chances to save themselves by giving them advocates and hearing their side of story there are some cases that may are foul where there is a need to hear both the parties but in case of joytiit was evident then why did they get so much time without even realising the depth of the matter they still had the audacity to appeal in high court and supreme court.

On the last day of Durgapuja, we say ‘Asche bochoraabarhobe’’(next years it will happen again) we say this in the hope that next year also she will descend again. However, Iwant to ask “aascheboochorabar ki hobe”(next year what will happen again) will we see another level of savagery being unleashed or another daughter will be standing next to Jyoti and Moumita. We all worship Durga maa, a female who is a representative of strength, power, and divine feminine energy. We have to re-route this hypocrisy that has dwelled in our society for time immemorial. To all the next gen parents (fathers and mothers), those devils who are residing alive in our society will remain but we have to make sure that after them we don’t create more of them, educate our sons so that this situation change we get better quality of men with less of male ego and more of carefulness.
