Love, what is that?

Image
Love, what is that? By Priyambda Samanta Roy (Sem I, 2023)   There is this movie, called Vickey, Christina, Barcelona, where a character, Christina, tried to find out ‘why love is so hard to define’ in a small video clip. The movie talks about love affair and how varied   love affairs could be. Have you ever searched for an answer? I am not talking about experiencing it I am talking about defining it. When I was in class 9th, I remember asking my elder sister about it. She said you will get to know about it with time and really happened at the very least now I can differentiate which is love and which is not. I literally have absolutely no dating experience. So, talking about love is not something I should talk about. But I feel that not everything is about having an experience, isn’t it? You don’t have to put your hands in the fire to know the hotness or temperature of it. Right? Before turning 13 I didn’t really give it a thought. I only knew about the rom...

Marriages and uncertainties

Image
Marriages and uncertainties by Ankita Majumder (Sem I, 2023) A woman, when she gets married to a man, her dreams are usually not very big. They are mostly minimal to herself. A woman, when she comes to her husband’s house leaving her life behind, has only one wish in her mind and that is to find her husband, her partner for eternity. She wants her husband to be a supporting person, who would believe in her, respect her and love her. What if her dreams get crashed down? What if her husband isn’t the person she thought he was. What if he turns out to be a ‘monster’ in the disguise of a gentleman. Her father cherished and cared for her like a princess and she thought that after marriage her husband would treat her like a queen. Is it her mistake to think like that? If the marriage doesn’t work out like it was expected, there is a possibility that she would be treated like a slave. Her wishes wouldn’t matter to him, her opinions wouldn’t matter to him, her dreams wouldn’t matter to him...

A missed farewell and death of a tree

Image
A missed farewell and death of a tree by Anuradha Chakraborty Well ask yourself, if you had something that you didn't need, would you regularly check it or take care of it? Imagine you plant a rose tree, but for what? Are you planting it for nothing, or would you hope that one day you would get roses from that plant? Every tree we plant, we expect to get something out of it. But if you say you actually expect nothing from it, you are either lying or you are an exceptional person. We have been seeing that parents love us selflessly since childhood, they fulfil all our expectations, pay for everything that we needmake us study. But do they really do it selflessly? Don’t they expect anything in return? Well anthropological study of The Gift by Marcell Mauss doesn’t say so. Mauss in his book The Gift shows that gifts are not selfless at all, they include a triple underlying obligations, to give, to receive, to return, often with increment. Coming back to the idea when our age is around...

Mom, are you a 'Superhero'? - a tribute to motherhood

Image
Mom, are you a 'Superhero'? by Ankita Majumder (Sem I, 2023)  “Who is she? A mere human being or a superhuman?” This question is not up for debate at all. Like who is “mother”. I’m sure she isn’t someone who takes care of the family while forgetting to take care of herself. I’m sure she isn’t someone who look after her child when they are ill the whole night while sacrificing her own sleep. I’m sure she isn’t someone who knows the solutions of all your problems. I’m sure she isn’t someone who always remembers where the specific thing is kept when we shout for it. I’m sure she isn’t someone who would always scold you before tending to your wounds. I’m sure she isn’t someone whom we all takes for granted because we know that she is going to be there for us forever. I’m sure she isn’t someone who teaches you a subject in a short period of time better than you can in your whole semester. I’m sure she doesn’t says that she isn’t hungry and gives you...

Friendship: An experience of a bumpy ride

Image
Friendship: An experience of a bumpy ride by Ankita Majumder, Sem I (2023) The word itself holds a lot of meaning behind it. The feelings, emotions, memories one gets when they hear, the word is astonishing. Friendship is a term which many hears by on a daily basis but it’s true meaning, is only known by few. It is a term which everyone seems to know, but the emotions attached to it cannot be experienced by a lot. There are many different types of friendships in this world. Some are short lived and some are for lifetime. But each one of them holds a very special place in our hearts. Some are like them. The two girls of my school used to be very great friends to eachother, they were always roaming around the corridors together, talking to eachother during a teacher’s period. They used to sit next to eachother, they were inseparable. But then one day due to a fight they both stopped talking. Might it be misunderstanding, I am not sure, but after that day they behaved like str...
